Getting to Know Author Laura Diamond
Laura Diamond is an author of all things Young Adult (YA): paranormal, dystopian, horror, and middle grade. As a board certified psychiatrist, she feels her education factors into her fiction helping her create compelling characters and real people. Diamond also knows how people react, pulling out the emotions not only from the characters but also the readers.
Laura Diamond always enjoyed reading, but she never thought she could write a novel. She experimented with short stories and creative writing during medical school. She took the plunge by visiting writing sites to hone her craft, and she began submitting manuscripts to publishers and finally being published.
Diamond approaches each book differently usually beginning with a single character. She’s drawn to the character — what they don’t know, how to figure, learn new world, rules and how to navigate within that world –. Then she presents a challenge for them to overcome a goal, sets up road blocks to get — throws in a twists and turns and the story writes itself. The journey that her character travels makes her stories so compelling.
She likes writing Young Adult (YA) because it is a time in one’s life when challenges are thrown your way while you are still trying to be independent from your family.
Diamond’s short story, City of Lights and Stone, is in the Day of Demons Anthology by Anachron Press (April 2012). Begging Death, a short story in Carnage: After the End Anthology by Sirens Call Publications is coming fall 2012. Her Young Adult Paranormal Romance, SHIFTING PRIDE, by Etopia Press launches fall 2012. Her Young Adult Dystopian, ENDURE, is slated for release June 2013.
When she’s not writing, she is working at the hospital, blogging at Author Laura Diamond–Lucid Dreamer, and renovating her 225+ year old fixer-upper mansion. She is also full-time staff member for her four cats and a Pembroke Corgi named Katie.
Laura loves horseback riding. She learned to ride on ex-race horses from Saratoga Race Track and you’ll find her racing around the track whenever possible.
Laura is a world traveler. Some of her favorite places include Israel, New Zealand, Australia, Burkina Faso, and Europe. She especially enjoyed visiting the ruins of Masada, touring the Hobbiton film set, getting lost in Venice, and watching the World Cup finals in a pub in Vienna.
